Y Vote program

The emerging civic leaders program engages 18 to 25 year-olds as active citizens.

Young people passionate about leading social change were invited to join the program in February and September 2019.

The program directly aligns with our social sustainability strategy, A City for All, to build an engaged community.

In the 3-month program, applicants were required to show a commitment as an emerging civic leader and live, work or study in our area.

The young leaders worked together on a 'pledge to vote' campaign to ensure young voices are heard in upcoming elections. The skills developed in the program can also be applied to work or study.

The program found:

  • 100% of participants were more likely to vote, get informed during elections and encourage their peers to vote at all levels of government
  • 81% of participants felt more confident to lead and inspire others to take action
  • 75% of participants learnt more about local government and would recommend the program to friends.

The emerging civic leaders program is run by the City of Sydney and youth empowerment organisation Y Vote. We sponsored 30 applicants in 2019.
