The primary role of a Justice of the Peace is to witness a person making a statutory declaration or affidavit, and to certify copies of original documents.
Project Status: When you need to do this
A justice of the peace is typically someone of good stature in the community who is authorised to witness and sign statutory declarations and affidavits and to certify copies of original documents.
You may need a JP to:
- administer oaths
- witness signatures
- witness affidavits
- witness statutory declarations
- certify copies of documents.
What you need to do

Search the Public Register
Find your nearest JP or a JP who speaks a particular language. You can search by postcode, name of a JP, day of availability, language spoken and JP registration number.

Please note that JPs are volunteers and may not be available at all times.

Prepare your statutory declaration
A statutory declaration is a written statement which a person swears, affirms or declares to be true in the presence of an authorised witness.
