What we’re doing

Proposed changes to planning controls in the local area to support affordable rental housing.

The changes aim to increase the amount of affordable rental housing in the City of Sydney area. They provide a comprehensive and transparent framework for applying affordable rental housing contributions when land is developed. They also simplify our current processes. These changes apply to land where the City is the consent authority.

The exhibition includes:

  • a planning proposal to amend Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2012
  • a draft affordable rental housing program to replace the Green Square and Employment Lands programs and supplement the Ultimo/Pyrmont program.

This follows the release of the Greater Sydney Commission’s eastern city district plan and a review of affordable rental housing needs and supply in the area.

After the exhibition, the City will consider all submissions and report the outcomes to Council and the Central Sydney Planning Committee. If Council and the Central Sydney Planning Committee approve the proposal, a request will be made to the Greater Sydney Commission to amend the Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2012.
